Where can a Career in Fitness take you? https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/where-can-a-career-in-fitness-take-you/ Wed, 11 Mar 2020 04:34:50 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/?p=20093
Author: Kristine Beissner
Fitness Institute’s National Training and Compliance Co-ordinator

Having been in the Fitness industry for just over thirty years, I often smile when I hear people say a long term career in sport, fitness and recreation isn’t possible.

While the role I have today helps Fitness Institute with systems, support, course materials, writing blogs and profiles, I started working in a fitness centre over three decades ago, and have been working in a variety of fitness related roles ever since.

Recently, I was asked to put together some words about resilience – possibly due to my professional and personal experiences and also because of the buzzword status resilience now has – particularly in relation to our careers.

It occurred to me that without explaining a little about my fitness career, there’d be no context around why I believe it’s important to invest time and effort in self-development and finding strategies to help us adapt to change….or why my thoughts are even relevant.

So, I had this idea to pop together some of my memories and career highlights, as well as some of my favourite pics (aka evidence) and help others believe:

  • A long term fitness career is possible and rewarding – when you understand where you’re strong and figure out how to deal with what challenges you the most
  • All knowledge is worth having – we can learn from history, situations, research, pop culture and the experiences of others – we don’t have to make a mistake to know it is one and valuable lessons are learned in many ways
  • Preparing for change is essential – it’s inevitable
  • Calculating risk and determining what you want are good first steps – asking yourself the “what’s the worst that can happen and can I live with the outcome?” questions are a good place to start when opportunity knocks and you’re ready to open that door

Which means there are two parts to this story…..

Part one in which I’ll share some of some of my career highlights and part two in which I’ll share why I believe developing resilience in your career is important.

So…. where can a career in fitness take you?

I’m going to say … where can’t it take you?

My fitness career started with gym supervision and group fitness instructing before progressing to personal training, health promotion seminars, working with training organizations, management, project work, VET and developing training and assessment materials.

Along the way I discovered many of the skills I learned were transferable, transportable and gave me the flexibility to accept part time contracts, move locations and study while continuing to earn a sustainable income.

Let’s go back… way back….

A teenager in the early 80’s, I saw Jane Fonda revolutionise the concept of “Fitness” and the impact of Jamie Lee Curtis doing her aerobics instructor thing in the movie PERFECT….

I was never the most sporty, athletic person in the room. And I wasn’t the chattiest, most fashionably dressed one either… I was the girl in the background, in awe of those amazing people working out and inspiring others to move….

But I did (and still do) love music and the 70’s disco and now classic 80’s dance music was magic and tailor made to move the masses!

A journey of a thousand steps….

My fitness career started in the late 80’s, when I was working as a receptionist at Slim City Fitness and Jim’s Gym in Cairns, North QLD.

Like many others who saw the fitness industry explode in popularity in the 90’s….we embraced the excitement of Step Reebok, sweated through Hi-lo, Interval and Fatburner classes and tracked down designer hand weights for our New Body classes….

We dressed in lycra of many designs and styles and colour matched our socks and accessories….

Music playlists were on cassette tapes copied from records – there was no pitch control on our tape decks then!

And while the industry didn’t start out this way, we were eventually given a stage to elevate us, custom made music to move us and microphones and groovy sound systems to enhance us…

We felt like stage performers…. and there’s no business like show business!

These were exciting, ground-breaking times and all who were there helped build the foundation on which our industry now stands!

The Rise & Rise of Fitness Ed….

I remember the very first fitness courses offered in QLD.

I couldn’t wait to become a qualified aerobics instructor in 1991 and do my resistance training module so I could become an accredited member of the Queensland Keep Fit Association (QFAC) in 1993….

Back then, qualifications weren’t essential, but for me, education and knowledge were!

In 1997, I was in Canberra, working with the team at Kippax Pool and Fitness Centre – a converted squash centre with an amazing fitness community, interesting mirrors above the stage and lots of green carpet. Freestyle, dance based, instructor-choreographed classes were still really popular…. but change was coming…

By the late 90’s, the fitness industry was evolving and diversifying. New formats and concepts were emerging and instructors were encouraged to learn them all!

Athleticism returned to group fitness and we were lining up to train as Johnny G Spin instructors and learn about this new concept of “pre choreography”.

New Millennium – New Opportunities….

Five Les Mills programs later, I found myself teaching BODYPUMP, BODYATTACK, RPM, BODYBALANCE and BODYSTEP.

After the building which housed KPFC was closed down and demolished in the late 90’s, having lost its battle with progress, I started a small business with a friend offering group fitness, personal training and remedial massage (having gained a Diploma in massage a few years earlier).

This led to being offered a role with Les Mills Australia as Master Assessor, then Training Manager, co-ordinating instructor training around Australia and South East Asia. I also got to help Les Mills International in Auckland with contract work ranging from proofing choreography, developing certification materials and helping set up the training and assessment department of LMI’s first North American agency.

So many memories of those early quarterly workshops!

It was during this time I was very fortunate to meet industry legend Monty Dortkamp, who invited me into his business and trained me in my first Certificate III and IV in Fitness and Training and Assessment qualifications in 2003.

In 2005, having just come back from helping set up LMI’s Californian agency, I came to that proverbial fork in the road.

I was on the lookout for a new challenge – which I found in managing clubs for The Club Group, now Viva Leisure. I was able to look after Club Pink at the Canberra Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre (CISAC) and help with setting up the Club Lime / Club Pink centre in Greenway.

During this time I was also able to help Dr Dion Klein at Wise Academy with training and assessment while continuing to teach group fitness.

In 2012, I accepted a two year, part-time admin contract in the ABC’s Northbourne newsroom and got to learn radio and news operations as well as supplement my income working weekends in Club Lime member services and teaching group classes. As I was studying a Bachelor of Communications at the time, this was most definitely a unique, exciting, not to be missed opportunity!

Then, it was 2014 and I was invited to help YMCA NSW establish the Gungahlin Leisure Centre’s Health Club in Canberra….

And this brings us to 2016 when I found myself in a meeting with Dean Bodle and Philip Sherriff at Fitness Institute which led to a role that allows me to use all I’ve ever learned in a diverse position encompassing course development, training and assessment support as well as compliance management.

How good is looking back…and forward…..?

The ability to do what I do today directly relates to the range of opportunities I’ve enjoyed and the people I’ve met throughout my career….many of whom I’m pleased to see, are still involved in sport, fitness and recreation today….

I should say though, not every career decision, choice and change of direction was easy or as I expected. Amongst the highlights are a range of other opportunities and projects I’ve tried my hand at, some more successful than others.

But I’m a firm believer in owning your choices…. And mistakes and things not working out can be opportunities to learn…… So I’ve learned sooooo many character building things throughout my working life!

And practical ones too, like take lots of photos…..

Over the years, the concept of Fitness transformed from an ideal to a credible industry and this in turn brought a higher level of government regulation and consumer expectations, which are of course, good things.

I have to admit, seeing where and how far we’ve traveled brings with it a mix of emotions, but as much as looking back is fun, so is speculating on what lies ahead and seeing all the new trends and ideas coming through – even though I find it’s getting a little harder to keep up with some of the more physically challenging ones nowadays…….

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the great many talented, dedicated, inspiring people with whom I’ve shared this journey with…. Some are pictured here and there are also many others who I hope, know who they are…..

People often make fun and some are judgemental of the things we did (and didn’t) do in the past, but I’m always quick to point out, that without the pioneers, true believers, trail blazers, visionaries, risk takers and early up-takers of fitness as business, we wouldn’t have the diverse, energetic, constantly evolving industry we know today…

There were no “how to” guide books to follow when we started that’s for sure…

Which brings me to part two – Developing Resilience and a Strong Fitness Career that works for you….

It’s Fitness Institute’s Tenth Anniversary! https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/its-fitness-institutes-tenth-anniversary/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:16:47 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/its-fitness-institutes-tenth-anniversary/

Fitness Institute Celebrates Ten Years!

That’s 120 months, 522 weeks, 3652 days, 878600 hours, 5258880 minutes and 315567360 seconds of helping people Embrace the Opportunity, Boost their Skills and Make the Change to a fitter, healthier lifestyle and career!

Time sure flies when you’re having fun, taking action, keeping moving and getting stronger!

From very humble beginnings, Fitness Institute has grown from offering face to face courses in the local community to include online delivery of Fitness, Health and Well being qualifications nationally.

Over the years, Fitness Institute has created a unique brand, developing a significant amount of its own promotional, training and assessment materials… all whilst expanding its offering from Certificate III and IV in Fitness to include the Certificate IV in Weight Management, the Group Exercise Leader Skillset as well as the Diploma of Fitness.

It all began with Dean Bodle taking a North Queensland holiday in 2005, after which he returned to his hometown of Melbourne, quit his job, packed up his belongings and drove back …. the very next month….

Four years later, Dean had opened a 50sqm personal training studio at the iconic, beach front Tobruk Memorial Pool on the Townsville’s Strand.

Seeing the need to provide educational opportunities and industry qualifications for local Fitness Instructors and Trainers, Dean started Registered Training Organisation, Fitness Institute, in August 2009.

In 2014, Philip Sherriff joined Fitness Institute as co-owner, Head Trainer and General Manager, allowing Dean to focus on and significantly expand his fitness business operations.

Having been an IT Manager and a Strength and Conditioning Trainer locally and overseas, Philip had a unique combination of skills, and this, along with his persistence and drive, proved instrumental in taking Fitness Institute through three significant phases of growth over a three year period.

Dean is the first to admit “Philip Sherriff brought Fitness Institute to a new level when he came in as Manager and co-owner. Fitness Institute would not be where it is today without his expertise in technology bringing our courses students all around Australia.”

Fitness Institute started in a small converted cycling studio with 3 staff delivering face to face courses. This studio was soon outgrown and a larger cycling studio was converted into a class room and office for 9 staff delivering face to face courses, school programs and national online training.

In 2017, the Health Hub became a reality and Fitness Institute, along with Strand Fitness North Ward and the Yoga Hub moved into a 4 storey, heritage-listed 2500sqm building on Flinders Street in Townsville’s CBD – making it one of the most unique fitness training facilities established today.

Today, Fitness Institute Headquarters occupies the top two floors of the Health Hub and Dean and Philip still work together to plot Fitness Institute’s strategic direction.

The team at Fitness Institute continue to specialise in fitness education, delivering face to face training locally and online courses Australia wide. The only difference is now, the team has grown to 20 people working from a wide range of locations.

Individually and together, Dean and Philip have achieved a significant amount in a very short time….

And what people see today as a fully established, national provider of Sport, Recreation, Fitness and Weight Management qualifications, has not come without its challenges, good times, achievements and celebrations!

Philip Sherriff – On Overcoming Adversity…. https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/philip-sherriff/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:13:21 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/philip-sherriff/ Philip Sherriff Fitness Institute

Having already achieved many personal and professional goals, Head Trainer, General Manager and part owner of Fitness Institute, Philip Sherriff has a keen interest in seeing others succeed.

Whilst Philip’s Bio details his experiences as a Trainer in Townsville and Canada, his time as assistant coach for WNBL team Townsville Fire and eleven years as an IT Manager, it does not capture what drives him. When Philip took on the Training / Managerial role at the Fitness Institute in 2014, he admits he had a lot of learning to do – so he learned on job and from the people around him. The business needed efficient, technology driven systems to grow as an online training provider and this was something he excelled at.

What people see today as a fully established provider of Sport, Recreation, Fitness and Weight Management qualifications, delivering training Australia wide, has not come without its challenges, especially considering that at a critical stage of the project, Philip discovered he had a life-threatening medical condition.

Talking about his bowel cancer diagnosis in 2015 the toll it has taken is clear to see, even though he is happy to discuss it. Initially putting the symptoms he was experiencing down to a change of eating patterns, Philip demanded a colonoscopy after seven visits to the doctors failed to provide answers. The words “There is no easy way to say this, we have found bowel cancer”, seem as clear today as when they were first spoken by his doctor.

Even though the challenges of starting a new business provided some distraction, the three months following the diagnosis proved trying. Philip believes himself lucky to live in the same city as a specialist surgeon who performed the keyhole surgery that prevented the need to cut sternum to waist and risk permanent disability. “Every challenge I have had in the past has helped me deal with what I faced during and after treatment.” Philip said, “From that first piece of bad news, almost everything that came after was good news and a big relief each tome. What I had to go through is minimal compared to what others have to deal with.”

Determined to share the lessons he had learned, Philip agreed to appear on a 2015 Channel Seven news story, sharing his experiences and raise awareness of Bowel Cancer month.

Philip’s partner Debra was with Philip at his diagnosis and remembers being sent away not knowing much about cancer. Debra remembers the questions people asked for which there were no answers like “Why Philip?” and “How could this happen to someone so focused on health and fitness?”

“We chose to be positive and organised, almost procedural in our approach.” said Debra, “After the surgery, when the doctor said they had it all, we learned that if it had been undetected any longer, it would have gone into the lymph nodes.”

Ask Philip how he deals with challenges, he will tell you that even when upset he tries to overcome awkwardness and get through it.

Ask Philip what he has learned about being in business, he will tell you he doesn’t delegate enough.

Ask Philip how he wants others to see him, he will tell you he wants to be perceived as good, honest, polite, hard working, respectful, helpful and only seeing the good in people.

Ask others what they think of Philip and they will tell you exactly the same things.

Philip has been instrumental in taking Fitness Institute through three significant phases of growth over a three year period. Starting in a small converted cycling studio with 3 staff delivering face to face courses, then a larger converted cycling studio with 9 staff delivering face to face adult learning and school programs as online nationally, Fitness Institute’s current location (as of December 2016) is the top two floors of an iconic, heritage building in the main street of the CBD.

An advocate for outreach programs, Philip regularly organises opportunities to talk to people about health and fitness and volunteers for local charities. Fitness Institute Director Dean Bodle says “Philip Sherriff brought Fitness Institute to a new level when he came in as RTO Operations Manager in May 2014 and co-owner in June 2015- our RTO would not be where it is today without his expertise in technology bringing the potential of completing our courses to every gym and  computer in Australia.”

At present, over 64% of the Australian population is overweight and Philip enjoys seeing students help their clients achieve composition and fitness goals, both during and after achieving their qualification.

Philip’s advice to all students to stay true to their dream of becoming a Personal Trainer. For those worried about the prospect of work after graduation, if you work hard, organise clients well, are willing to wake up early and make the necessary sacrifices – a career in sport, fitness and recreation is a very achievable goal. Don’t take any days for granted, while you have your health and fitness – it is a privilege to be in a position to be able to coach others…

Phil’s philosophy, can also be summed up in his favourite quote…“What I don’t know I’ll learn. What I ain’t got I’ll earn.” – Edmund Rice

As well as these three quick Q & A’s…..

Q1. What drew you to the Fitness industry or what do you love the most about the Fitness Industry?
The positive nature of the Fitness Industry is what drew me in. Being around happy, like minded people made me want to me around these people more often.
Q2. Who or what inspires or motivates you and why?
Anyone who makes the most of any opportunity will always inspire me. We have so many opportunities here in Australia regardless of your current position. If you’re willing to put in the hard work and put aside your excuses, it’s amazing what is possible.
Some of our students manage to work through anything from financial hardship to having physical disabilities to then training others – it’s amazing what some of our students and their clients have now achieved.

Q3. What is your favourite fitness, sport and/or recreation activity?
I grew up playing Rugby Leave, Athletics, Basketball and Table Tennis. I now focus on Gym and CrossFit as my main 2 sports and activities.

Coastal Throwdown 2018 – it’s a wrap! https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/coastal-throwdown-2018-its-a-wrap/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:13:21 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/coastal-throwdown-2018-its-a-wrap/

From the iconic Tobruk Pool in the morning to the historic Flinders Street Health Hub in the evening, the Crossfit Coastal Throwdown Saturday June 2nd proved to be an exciting, energetic day for all concerned….

Fitness Institute General Manager Philip Sherriff, helped co-ordinate the day-long event, volunteering the necessary time and experience in event management and Crossfit as well as sponsorship for the event.

Most of what happens at an event happens before it begins and days like this are impossible without the support of volunteers and sponsors. The Business Owners, family and friends of Strand Fitness, Strand Crossfit, Crossfit Tropics, XFF Fitness, Crossfit 4802 Wolf Den and Crossfit Take Charge all came together to make the day a big success!

The Fitness Institute students who volunteered their time gained some valuable insights into what goes into organising an event (from Risk management to Marketing) as well as first-hand experience with Crossfit training and competition.

The day raised $2030.00 for nominated charity, Soldier On and a cheque was presented to Deb Rowland who is also raising funds for Soldier On by swimming from Magnetic Island to Townsville on July 29th. You can donate to Deb’s fund raising here: https://soldieron.giveeasy.org/campaigns/magnetic-island-to-townsville-swim/

Raising money is one thing…raising awareness is another….

Retired General John Calligari also came to share his experiences with Soldier On and the challenges Defence Force personnel face making the transition from the structure of the ADF to civilian life. Statistics such as ex-ADF personnel are dying by suicide at 3.5 times the average for civilians of the same age are a sobering reminder of the importance of organisations like Soldier On.

All in all, the 2018 Coastal Throwdown was a rewarding day which brought out the personal best in everyone!

We’d like to thank everyone for being there and making it happen!

Dean Bodle – on maintaining momentum… https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/dean-bodle-on-maintaining-momentum/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:13:21 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/dean-bodle-on-maintaining-momentum/

What started as a career as a Personal Trainer, has evolved into a fulltime business owner/management role for Dean Bodle, who has in less than a decade, established no less than six significant businesses and move from 50 to 4000sqm of fitness space over 4 sites.

These days, business management and development is a full-time job but Dean still takes the occasional PT session, Bootcamp or Crossfit session as he feels it’s important to know your product and stay in touch with what you offer as a service.

Advice to Trainers…

A self-confessed risk-taker, Dean believes that to be successful, Trainers need to know as much about running a business as they do about running a class or Bootcamp  – they are their primary and most important product or brand.

Dean believes that staying up with the times has been key to his business success and ongoing education and development are essential to fast-track a career, stay motivated and raise a Trainer’s level of skill, credibility and employability.

The future is functional….

Dean believes we’ve hit the functional training era and this is the future. Eventually, gyms will be all rigs and free weights…

Dean’s story…

After a holiday in North Queensland in 2005, Dean returned to his hometown of Melbourne, quit his job, packed up his belongings and drove back to Townsville the very next month.

Four years later, Dean opened a 50sqm personal training studio at the Tobruk Memorial Pool on the Strand in 2009.

At this stage there was only the upstairs space with 2 treadmills, 1 crosstrainer, 2 bikes, a smith machine, power rack and cable crossover – the downstairs and additional concrete slab came later…

Recognising the need for a full service health club, Dean opened Strand Fitness where the old Townsville Hospital complex in North Ward used to be, in 2010.

Let’s not stop there…..

Dean also founded Registered Training Organisation, Fitness Institute in 2009 to provide an opportunity for Trainers to become qualified in Certificate III and IV in Fitness. Soon-after, Philip Sherriff came into the business as co-owner, and now the organisation has grown to deliver online courses nationally as well as continuing to deliver face to face courses locally.

Having pioneered outdoor Bootcamps in Townsville and established a strong community in Strand Fitness, Dean was determined to keep up with the times, converting the Tobruk studio to a Crossfit Gym in 2011 and bringing Hot Yoga to his Yoga Studios.

Then, it was on to researching large, commercial, big-city clubs and working with an Architect to design the building and fit-out for Strand Fitness North Shore in the Northern suburbs of Townsville, which opened its doors in 2014.

But, wait… there’s more!

In 2017, the Health Hub was born and the North Ward club, Yoga Hub and Fitness Institute moved into a 4 storey, iconic, heritage-listed 2500sqm building on Flinders Street in Townsville’s CBD, making it one of the most unique health clubs established today.

Then, in 2018, Dean was involved in the design and opening of Crossfit Tropics, all whilst continuing to manage his businesses and on a personal note, become a first-time dad!

Not surprisingly, Dean is not content to rest.

There’s plans in the pipeline to develop the products and services delivered in his clubs and it’s clear to see moving forward on an upward trajectory is the best way maintain momentum!

Succeeding at Online Training https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/succeeding-at-online-training/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:13:21 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/succeeding-at-online-training/
There are many reasons why online training is fast becoming the preferred option for educators and students around Australia – it’s convenient, cost-effective and accessible.

We’ve asked some of our online students to share what’s kept them motivated and it’s clear from theirs and our experiences in virtual and real classrooms, study success relies on being organised, disciplined and self-motivated and it’s enhanced by the social networks and connections we develop.

And yes, it is do-able….

Successful completion of online training requires the same ingredients as achieving any long term goal – discipline, organisation and motivation, plus it helps to have a support network to assist, support and understand the often challenging process of studying.

We see this recipe for success in students all around Australia, so we asked some of our recent Certificate III and IV online graduates, to share what and who helped motivate them to keep going, stay committed and ultimately achieve their goals,….

Kaylee will tell you – “Hard work pays off!”

Helped along the way by mentor and Animal Flow Trainer, Paul of The Movement Fitness and Wellbeing, Kaylee learned valuable service and functional movement techniques on the way to realising her goal of becoming a fully qualified personal trainer.
Drawing further inspiration from her coach Shelby, Kaylee learned to set goals and balance work and life in order to achieve both personal and professional goals.
Kaylee’s favourite quote is from Dr Suess – “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Martin – Victoria

Leaving behind a 20 year retail career, Martin started working as a Yoga Instructor and studying the Certificate III of Fitness to gain a wider knowledge of how the body works and broaden his view of health and fitness.
Drawing inspiration from his wife Ally and mentor Jess from the Ox Effect, Martin is looking forward to teaching other styles of group fitness classes and continuing to learn, grow and evolve.
Martin has a fondness for Manchester United’s Eric Cantona’s much-discussed quote, “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea”. Martin is not sure where his journey will end, but he’s sure it will be a joyful one! P.S. Having only planned to do Certificate III in Fitness, Martin started the Certificate IV in Fitness soon-after finishing to keep learning more….

Understandably, Kerrod is inspired by former US Olympic lifting qualifier, now Reebok Cross Fit champion, Mat Fraser’s return after a serious back injury requiring surgery didn’t stop him from achieving his training and competitive goals…
Helped along the way with the group fitness, strength and conditioning knowledge and experience provided by mentor Nigel King from King’s Fitness, Kerrod is well and truly on track to achieve his goals…

Dean – New South Wales
Dean, a qualified personal trainer started his fitness journey in January 2016 when a work colleague, who ran boot camps, inspired him to do something a little different.
Being in the military, Dean knew it would be hard to complete fitness qualifications whilst maintaining a full-time job. After some investigation though he decided to go ahead with it and 12 months later, in spite of shifting around with the military, he was finished!
Dean obtained work experience with the qualified Physical Training Instructor at a gym at one of the bases he was at and was given a great deal of support in the initial stages of training.
Dean told us “After seeking further advice from Phillip at Fitness Institute I decided to look to broaden my experiences and started working in different boot camps, outdoor fitness classes, and aquatic classes around Sydney. Eventually, I met Dani Carr, owner of Dynamic Core Personal Training (DCPT) within Anytime Fitness Northbridge and Surry Hills (part owner). Dani completely changed my perspective on the Fitness Industry and showed me not only how to properly train and retain clients but also how to successfully run a business. I found it easy to liaise with Dani and Fitness Institute and the rest of my course was a breeze.”
“The best part about the course was that it was challenging, motivating, flexible but most importantly it was fun and has completely changed the way I train, think and talk about fitness. I look forward to the challenges ahead”.

Tara – Victoria

“Sometimes you have to run through the storm, before you reach the rainbow…”

Goal-focused, determined and motivated, Tara has a particular interest in helping the elderly and teaching group classes, Tara is passionate about fitness and looks forward to passing on the knowledge gained through the course in meaningful ways.
Achieving this qualification will also give Tara the ability to move in different directions and achieve her personal goals, no matter how big or how small they may be.

Dean Gilbert – successful studying on the move https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/dean-gilbert/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:12:32 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/dean-gilbert/ My name is Dean Gilbert, I am 22 years old and thanks to the Fitness Institute, I am now a qualified personal trainer. My journey started in January of 2016 where a work colleague, who ran a boot camp outside of our core working hours, inspired me to want to do something a little different. Being in the military I knew I would find it hard to complete my fitness certificates whilst also maintaining a full-time job but after speaking with Fitness Institute I felt as though I would definitely be able to achieve this goal.

They offered me a great deal of support and advice and were flexible in allowing me a full 12 months to complete the course while I shifted around Australia with the military. I eventually started work experience with a gym at one of the bases I was working at with the qualified Physical Training Instructor staff and was given a great deal of support in the initial stages of my training.

After seeking further advice from Philip at Fitness Institute I decided to look to broaden my experiences and started working in different boot camps, outdoor fitness classes, and aquatic classes around Sydney. Eventually I met Dani Carr, owner of Dynamic Core Personal Training (DCPT) within Anytime Fitness Northbridge and Surry Hills (part owner). Dani completely changed my perspective on the Fitness Industry and showed me not only how to properly train and retain clients but also how to successfully run a business. I found it easy to liaise with Dani and FitnessInstitute and the rest of my course was a breeze.

The best part about the course was that it was challenging, motivating, flexible but most importantly it was fun and has completely changed the way I train, think and talk about fitness. I look forward to the challenges ahead.

Thank you Fitness Institute and thank you Dynamic Core Personal Training.

Air Squats https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/air-squats/ Thu, 02 Jan 2020 12:11:10 +0000 https://fitnessinstitute.com.au/2020/01/02/air-squats/
Air Squats are the foundation exercise for a great many other movements, especially when it comes to performing compound movements such as cleans and snatches. Needless to say, Air squats are one of the most important exercises to master when it comes to sport conditioning.

Start by being as upright as possible with feet shoulder-width apart.

Keep the weight on your heels as you go back by moving your butt or hips back first. Try to keep shins and back (torso) as vertical as possible.

Place hands out in front as you descend for counterbalance and press through heels to prevent knees from coming in.

As you rise, bring hands back to your side.

Ideally, you should be able to get your hip crease lower than the top of your knee.

If you cannot reach this depth, there may be a reason preventing this, such as:

  • An injury (recovering ACL, PCL, MCL, meniscus, etc)
  • Tight muscles (Hip flexors, angle flexors and extensors, hamstrings, lower back)
  • Your structural anatomy

Tips for improving and correcting form:

If you have an excess lean forward, you may want to use a counterbalance such as holding a kettlebell to help to keep the core engaged and stay as upright as possible.

You can also use your hands to creep down and up a vertical pole to help maintain a vertical back position while keeping feet flat on the floor and shins vertical.

More tips courtesy of Dean Bodle:

Remember to seek the advice of your fitness trainer, medical and/or allied health professionals, if you are new to exercise or have an injury or medical condition to consider.
